Maraqua is an underwater kingdom discovered by Professor Chesterpot during the Hunt for the Battledomeplot. The first kingdom, Old Maraqua, was discovered on 6 October 2000, but destroyed by a whirlpool on 18 August 2001, leaving only ruins. The survivors founded a new kingdom that was discovered in March 2005.

Visually, Old Maraqua's structure was very different from New Maraqua's. Old Maraqua was built out of transparashield, and had the look of a futuristic ocean colony. The smooth, bubble-like windows seemed to imply that there was an atmosphere inside the buildings. New Maraqua has a coral-like appearance, is made out of Maractite, and is open to the oceans.

History[edit]

Old Maraqua[edit]

Main article: Hunt for the Battledome
Main article: Destruction of Maraqua

Maraqua was first discovered on 6 October 2000 by Professor Chesterpot while he was trying to rediscover the Battledome. It was the site of a battle between Chiazilla and MechaChiazilla.

The original incarnation of Maraqua was destroyed by a whirlpool on 18 August 2001. It used to be home to the the Underwater Kitchen Quests, later relocated to Mystery Island, and AquaticPetpets, most of which were redesigned and are now being sold on Mystery Island. It also used to sell Utility Fish and Aquatic Foodsitems, which are now all retired.

The whirlpool followed a Flashmovie released the previous day, in which the Pirate Captain Dread, a skeletal Kiko, sailed to Maraqua in a submarine. He demanded his annual 'protection money' from King Koi, the then King of Maraqua, who refused to pay (giving reasons such as a 'poor Kelp Harvest'). From the tone of this conversation, it can be assumed that Captain Dread regularly came for this money. The whirlpool is believed to be the result of a curse from this Pirate. The whirlpool, ten miles wide, lasted until the 31 May 2002, where is finally subsided to reveal the Ruins of Maraqua.

The old look of the Maraqua ruins

After the whirlpool ruined the city, the Ruins began to be populated again, first by a gigantic Slug Monster, then by a Mysterious Statue, then by a Bubbling Pit (listing all the available Maraqua-coloured Neopets), then by an Underwater Fishing area.

New Maraqua[edit]

Main article: Curse of Maraqua

King Kelpbeard set about building a new, more splendid city. He kept its existence a secret to protect it from those that would do it harm. However, news of its existence got out when Isca saved Garin's life. Captain Scarblade and his pirates set out to destroy New Maraqua, but were defeated by Swordmaster Talek's Maraquan army and Garin's pirates. This lead to Maraqua opening their doors to the public again.

Colour[edit]

Main Article: Maraquan

Maraquan is one of the many colours that users can paint their Neopets and Petpets. Maraquan pets resemble underwater creatures, both real and mythological. The Maraquan colour for Neopets was released on June 17, 2003, and the Maraquan colour for Petpets was released on April 21, 2004.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Neopets Team gave a hint Maraqua would return in the Advent Calendar of December 27, 2004, which showed all current bands of the Concert Hall playing to a version of Do They Know It's Christmas? with the words 'Rebuild Maraqua - Let them know Neopia loves them!'. A Rebuild Maraqua Poster was given out as a prize on the same day.
  • Kiko Lake is another underwater settlement.

Cybunny, Krawk, and Usul spending some time fishing.

Underwater Fishing is a fishing game found in an underwater cave in Old Maraqua. It opened for business on June 20, 2005. These caves give a users Neopet a chance to fish for an item. The item caught is random, but as a pet's fishing skill increases new items become available. Fishing skill is increased at random when a Neopet successfully fishes for any item. At a higher fishing skill, more valuable items can be received.

A Neopet can check to see if they have something on their fishing line at any time, but receiving a prize is a timed event, and if not enough time has passed since the last visit, nothing is awarded. It's believed users should check back once every 2-12 hours depending on their Neopets fishing skill.

Fishing skill can also be raised by having a Neopet read the bookFishing Made Easy. This increases fishing skill by 1-3, and just like other books can only be read once to a Neopet. The book is a prize while fishing and it is currently believed a minimum fishing skill 20 is needed to be caught.

Although users can only fish with the pets on their main account, they can fish with all four of their pets every day, increasing their chances of getting a valuable item.

Trivia[edit]

  • Users can receive the Fishing - Titanic SquidAvatar when their Neopets fishing skill is at least 80 and catch a Titanic Giant Squid.
  • Users at fishing level 40 and over could catch a book called 'waterlogged book'. Though it was always classified as a book item, neopets could not decipher the runny text until August 10th, 2005.
  • The Bag of Broken Neopoints can be fixed at the Toy Repair Shop and in return, the user receives over 1000 Neopoints and the item disappears. However, when the Underwater Fishing game was first released, there was a glitch where the Bag of Broken Neopoints didn't disappear after being fixed several times, which made users able to receive lots of Neopoints using this glitch, and they eventually got frozen.
  • There are 88 catchable Underwater Fishing items including a variety of edible fish and squid, seaweed that can be placed in a user's Neogarden, books, Battledome weapons, special items, and junk.
  • New prizes became available on 10 August 2012.
